Internet Culture: What Are We Arguing About? (Or, How To Feed A Troll.)

I am a geek, and I'm proud of who and what I am. The geeks of the world are often lampooned as being prone to engage in pointless debates on topics that most would consider mundane, or at best, just not that important. I proclaim to you that this is not a trait of geeks, it's a trait of all human beings...and I can prove it. I can declare this with impunity as a result of the internet culture, and the radical changes it has made to the way we humans interact with one another and express ourselves. Simply put, the internet gives us a potentially global audience that we didn't have before. Now, your strongly held beliefs that Han Solo was right to shoot first are no longer contained to your local sci-fi club or your circle of (actual) friends. Now you can bring those controversial views to the whole world and finally be heard, and all kidding aside, that's really, really cool. But now that we've had this audience at our disposal for many years, where has it brought us? It has brought us to the point where we argue and debate on every little thing imaginable, no matter how small or insignificant.

I'll give you an example. I just watched a video on YouTube that demonstrates a new soda vending machine. He begins the demonstration with this comment:

"First off, you put ice in your drink, unless you're some sort of loser."

Like a match on gasoline, the flame war erupted. At least half of the comment posters (no, I didn't really count them) fixated on that one statement with no regard for what the video was actually about.

My whole point is, now that we have this wonderful, world-wide medium with which to express ourselves, it has made seemingly everyone on the planet eager for a good argument. Now, arguments are not inherently bad. Arguments are how we evolve and change as a society, but I'm sorry. Whether or not you like ice in your drink is not an argument that's going to change the world for the better, and that's just one example.

Internet trolls thrive on this, and they think they're above you because they know it. They know that all they have to do is make one pointed, opinionated comment about whatever it is you've posted and a torrent of debate will erupt. The sad thing is, many of them couldn't care less about the actual topic. They just want to see what they can stir up for fun. I can't say I blame them, because it relates to one of the principles I live by: If you advertise what pushes your buttons, prepare to have the hell pushed out of them.

Trolls are good for our culture, in that they force us to either thicken our oversensitive skins, or stay out of the fray. Now, let the trolling on this post begin.

Welcome to Goodblogs! Although I do not have a plate of chocolate chip cookies to greet you, I believe that you will find this to be a friendly community. The writers on this site enjoy a good debate as long as no disrespect and name calling is involved. We appreciate reading diverse blogs that may even differ from our own beliefs, but do not appreciate rude comments. From reading your blog, I believe you will enjoy it here in the GB Community! Be sure to vote and comment on the posts of others in turn they will visit your blog. Again, welcome!

How fabulous your timing is, Christopher! I've always said that I enjoy a good debate . . . which I find quite different from an argument. Very little comes from an argument. Debates help us to see things from another perspective or hold strong to our convictions. Excellent first post and welcome to GoodBlogs :-)

Thank you very much! :-) Yes, that is a worthy distinction to make. Debates are meant to be productive, or at least they hope to be. I just read another thread regarding whether or not a photo was genuine or Photoshopped. No prize was at stake, it was just an otherwise pretty picture. Thanks to the internet, we now have time to give value to a picture based on whether or not it was digitally created or altered. It was an interesting discussion, and I confess that I contributed, but when did we ever have time for things like this before the internet?

Well there is definitely that. You know I once had a good friend of mine try to goad me into a debate with him, saying that Star Wars was better than Star Trek. His evidence? The phasers on Star Trek fired a sustained beam, and thus revealed the point they were shooting from. The blasters in Star Wars only fired a short burst, and thus, were superior. This person then went on to declare that he wasn't a geek. I had to let it go, and it was probably for the best. Besides, everybody knows Star Trek is better.

Star Trek sucks! hehehehehehehehe Lame, I know, but I couldn't resist! Oh, and by the way . . . I don't put ice in my drinks. I have a whole ice philosophy. Ice is self-defeating. If you allow the ice to make your drink cold, it will have watered down said drink. If you drink your drink fast enough so that it does not get watered down, the ice never had a chance to make the drink cold.

I don't like ice in my soda. Should I be offended? The producers cleverly baited those trolls. It's innocent enough not to get anyone in trouble, but irresistible enough to trolls to get attention.

If you are, go post a comment on that video. lol You are absolutely correct! In that example, the guy in the video itself was the troll. Once again it shows how easily people can be drawn in. If advertisers start using that technique for actual marketing purposes, we don't stand a chance. There is nothing an advertiser would like more than for people to endlessly exchanging comments about their product. Even though the heated topic was about ice and not the product itself, it was all done in the context of that product. A very well-played move. I should also point out here that I found that video from a link on the advertiser's official website, so even though it looks candid, I seriously doubt that it is.

LOL Christopher Jones perfect post at the perfect timing! :-) Welcome to the GB community. Your post reminds me of when I read peoples' comments on cnn, fox, msn, yahoo internet articles. Definitely a lot of "trolls" out there just trying to stir the pot. While it can be great entertainment, it can get out of control pretty quickly. Thus why I'm a pretty passive person. :-) Out of votes this a.m. but will come back to vote in a few hours. Thank you for sharing and if you have time pls check out my latest blog post, would love your feedback. Again, welcome and look forward to your upcoming posts!

THIS POST STINKS! Just kidding. Just thought I'd try out how it felt like to be a troll. If you visit my latest post you might find out part of the story of why this post was so timely. Don't vote for it though - it's been through the mill, and wasn't very good in and of itself...but the comments are entertaining. And I do need to learn how to stay out the fray. I really don't mind different opinions at all - it's just when people are MEAN....that's what I don't like. This was, in actuality, a great first post. I'm out of votes but will be back tomorrow to vote :)

Mini Star Trek Quiz 1. Outside of Klingonese, what other Star Trek alien languages are you fluent in? 2. If Data's cat is named Spot, any future dog he owns must logically be named what? 3. Have you ever though to display a horga'hn to engage in jamaharon? Was it successful? 4. If the Vulcan's had not introduced an alien technology called "Velcro" in 1957, would the U.S. have actually been able to land on the moon in 1969? Or were the Vulcans behind that scam as well? 5. Lursa or B'Etor?
